Utility Locating
Non-destructive digging to locate and verify underground pipes and cables.
Certainty Below Ground: Hydrovac Utility Locating
Utility locating is a multi-step process. It begins with electromagnetic wands and ground-penetrating radar to create marks on the surface. But these marks are just an estimate. Hydrovac utility locating, also known as potholing or visual verification, is the final and most crucial step. It provides 100% certainty by safely excavating a small hole to physically expose the utility, confirming its exact type, depth, and position. This eliminates all guesswork and is the ultimate defense against dangerous and costly utility strikes.
The Critical Role of Visual Verification
Electronic locating equipment is sophisticated but not infallible. Signals can be distorted by soil conditions, other utilities, or overhead interference, leading to inaccurate depth readings or positioning. A paint mark on the ground doesn't tell you if a line is 2 feet deep or 6 feet deep, a critical difference for any excavation project. By creating a small, non-destructive "pothole" with a hydrovac, we can directly see and measure the utility. This process, often a key component of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), provides the ground-truth data that engineers need to design projects safely and that contractors need to dig with confidence.
Our Utility Locating (Potholing) Process
- Review Locate Information: We start with the existing utility locate marks provided by the client or their designated locating service.
- Excavate the Pothole: We excavate a small-diameter hole (typically 8-12 inches) directly over the paint mark. The hydrovac's precision allows us to do this safely even on a busy sidewalk or roadway.
- Expose and Identify: The soil is carefully washed away until the utility is exposed. Our experienced operators can identify the utility type (e.g., gas line, water main, fiber optic duct).
- Measure and Document: Once exposed, we measure the precise depth from the surface to the top of the utility. This data, along with photos and GPS coordinates, is provided to the client for their records.
- Safe Restoration: The small pothole is then carefully backfilled and compacted, leaving a minimal trace of the excavation.
Why Potholing is Non-Negotiable for Critical Projects
Visual verification is essential in many scenarios:
- Pre-Engineering and Design: Engineers require exact utility data to design new buildings, roads, and infrastructure without conflicts.
- Working Near Critical Infrastructure: When excavating near major pipelines, high-voltage electrical lines, or fiber optic backbones, visual confirmation is a mandatory safety step.
- Urban and Industrial Sites: In areas with a complex web of old and new utilities, potholing is the only way to safely navigate the underground maze.
- Directional Drilling Projects: Before starting a horizontal drill, crews must pothole all utilities along the drill path to ensure the drill head will pass safely above or below them.
